Why Take a Ghost Tour in Denver?
Denver was founded in 1858 by settlers who were drawn to the area with the hope of striking it rich in the gold rush. While Denver might not be the first city that comes to mind for paranormal activity, the convergence of the Wild West and the mining industry boom created the perfect setting for debauchery and corruption, laying the groundwork for all manner of sinister spirits.
Ghost tours in Denver are centered around the historic neighborhoods: Capitol Hill, Cheesman Park, and LoDo. These neighborhoods are walkable and offer plenty of restaurants and bars to enhance your experience! A ghost tour is the perfect addition to a fun night out in Denver.
While the Denver Terrors Ghost Tour is essential for ghost enthusiasts, it is also great for history aficionados. I loved learning about the darker side of Denver’s history and the influential people who pulled the strings.
Denver Terrors Ghost Tour Overview
The Denver Terrors Ghost Tour by US Ghost Adventures takes you past the most haunted places in Denver, such as the Croke-Patterson-Campbell House (now a hotel called the Patterson Inn, if you are brave enough to stay) and the Peabody Whitehead Mansion.
It is a one-hour guided walking tour that covers a one-mile loop in the Capitol Hill neighborhood. There are six stops in total, and a few additional ghost stories to enjoy!
The Denver Terrors tour happens every night, rain or shine. Tickets are $26 for an adult and $17 for children under 13.
This tour is great for families, although many of the stories feature mature topics. There were several families on our tour. Dogs are also welcome on the tour, since you don’t enter any buildings. We brought Kala along, and she gives it five paws!
Our tour consisted of 16 people, but tours vary in size.

The Experience: Sinister Storytelling
When the bells toll, your ghost tour begins at the Colorado State Capitol, where you will learn about the macabre history of this building and the ghosts that haunt it. Even though I am from Colorado, I didn’t know that there were tunnels under the city, including under the Capitol, to transport coal. You will hear about several spirits that haunt the Capitol and the underground tunnels, terrorizing the employees.
In the early days of Denver, the area surrounding the Capitol was home to the wealthiest individuals, many of whom held important political roles, leading the area to be coined Millionaires’ Row. This is where you will head next on your ghost tour to hear haunting stories of betrayal and political corruption.
When you reach a stop, the guide will have everyone gather around while they describe the history, before delving into the sinister details. A couple of stories were told while we were walking, which made it hard to hear everything, but this was not the norm. Tyler, our guide, was engaging and historically knowledgeable.
I didn’t find the Denver Terrors Ghost Tour scary, but it was spooky with a couple of unsettling moments (I haven’t been scared during any other ghost tours I’ve done either). I enjoyed learning more about Denver’s history; even as a local, there was plenty of new information!
The tour ends at the Capitol, in the same place where it begins.
Highlights from the Denver Terrors Ghost Tour
A highlight of our tour was visiting the Peabody Whitehead House, the most haunted house in Denver. There are several ghost stories surrounding this house and its occupants, William Whitehead, a surgeon in the Civil War, and James Peabody, a mine owner. I won’t spoil it, but this house was giving creepy vibes! Someone on our tour rented an EMF detector, which theoretically measures ghostly activity through electromagnetic anomalies, and it was flashing like crazy while we stood in front of this house.
The Peabody Whitehead House has been vacant for several years, adding to the mystery. Someone recently bought it, so we’ll have to see if something becomes of it soon!
Practical Tips for Your Ghost Tour
Best Time of Year for a Ghost Tour in Denver
The Denver Terrors Ghost Tour is offered at least once a day, year-round, and twice a day during high season. The best time of year for a ghost tour in Denver is summer, when the evenings are pleasantly warm and the days are long, or fall, when Halloween is approaching. Spring could also be a good time to take a ghost tour in Denver, but spring weather in Colorado can be unpredictable.
What to Bring on Your Ghost Tour in Denver
This is a walking tour, so wear good walking shoes. The tours are held rain or shine. Check the weather and bring a jacket and/or an umbrella as needed.
I always recommend bringing a water bottle.
If you bring your dog, bring extra water and dog bags to clean up after them if needed.

If you haven’t had enough ghosts for one night, head to 12 Spirits Tavern, located inside the Patterson Inn and named for the number of spirits that supposedly haunt the building. This bar serves up craft cocktails in Patterson’s old smoking lounge.
Another bar for hauntingly good cocktails is Honor Farm Haunted Spirit House in LoDo. This bar is decked out for Halloween (and Satan worship) all year long, making it a perfect place for a nightcap on a ghostly evening in Denver. If you’re lucky, you might glimpse the resident ghost, Lydia.
