I love hiking but I am too busy to be able to spend all my time deep in the woods. With so many trails near Denver, there’s no need to go out of your way to reconnect with nature.
Since hiking is such a fun (and free) activity, I love trying new trails with my friends to save a buck. Here are some of my favorite quick hikes near Denver!
North/South Table – Golden
Located right in Golden, these hikes will fit into your day easily. There are variable lengths and difficulties available and the views at the top are worth the trek. Make a day of it in Golden or head over after work; either way, you’ll be pleased.
White Ranch Open Space – Golden
This park is great. Very close to town and absolutely beautiful. This is a big park with multiple entrances, but we entered on Pine Ridge Road off of highway 93. The trails vary in difficulty and are also frequented by bikers and runners, so be cautious. This trail is dog friendly, so bring the pooch.
Clear Creek Trail – Golden
More of a walk than a hike, but some days that is exactly what I need. This trail follows Clear Creek through Golden. It’s nice to take your shoes off a wade into the water, especially if it’s a hotter day. Also great for a pre- or post- dinner walk!
Boulder Canyon Trail – Boulder
A very pretty, easy trail that follows Boulder Creek up through Boulder Canyon. It is easily accessible if you live farther north or want to spend a day exploring Boulder. Another good place to splash around in the water on a hot day!
Royal Arch Trail – Boulder
This 3.2 mile loop is part of Chautauqua Park. There are, of course, many awesome trails in Chautauqua Park, home of the Flatirons, but I really loved Royal Arch. This trail is a little difficult, however, as it is basically stairs up the side of the mountain. Some parts are very steep and Kona struggled, even though the trail is dog friendly. The view at the top was amazing, albeit a little crowded.
Deer Creek Canyon – Littleton
Many trail options and pretty landscapes – what’s not to like? This is a great hike if you live near Littleton or Lakewood, otherwise it’s a bit of a drive.
Lair o’ the Bear – Idledale
Also a great trail, Lair o’ the Bear follows Bear Creek with a slight incline. This trail is only 30 minutes from Denver, but it feels much more remote from the hustle and bustle. It follows Bear Creek and is a great option for families or inexperienced hikers.
Matthews/Winters Park – Morrison
Just next to Red Rocks, this trail is beautiful, but I never tried it because I always went to the more famous Red Rocks. Matthews/Winters Park also has beautiful red colored rocks, wildflowers, a creek, and beautiful views. Highly recommend visiting (and bringing your awesome friends)!
