Placencia is a secluded paradise at the southern-most tip of Belize’s peninsula. Restaurants in Placencia, Belize, are laidback to match the speed of this small beach village. They focus on fresh and simple ingredients, Belizean flavors, and locally sourced seafood. Meals are often served seaside with your toes in the sand. Here are some of the restaurants you don’t want to miss when you visit this slow beach escape as well as some tips for a successful foodie vacation in Placencia!

Seasonal Dishes

Many of the menus we saw advertised conch dishes, which Luke and I really wanted to try. Unfortunately, conch season is October 1st through June 30th, which did not overlap with our visit. July 1st through February 28th is Lobster season. These seasons are enforced to ensure conservation of the populations, making Belize a sustainable place to try these delicacies!

A Note On Seasonal Closures

Placencia is a small village and several restaurants operate seasonally or have closed since my visit — including Dawn’s Grill and Tranquilo. If you visit during the off-season, you will likely experience seasonal closures. Always check Google Maps before you go.

The Best Restaurants in Placencia, Belize

Here are a couple of restaurants in Placencia that you don’t want to miss!

Barefoot Beach Bar

Best for: Beach vibes, beachfront dining

Barefoot Beach Bar is the beach bar from your dreams. Beachfront, open-air, and laidback. Bury your feet in the sand and sip one of their tropical cocktails while enjoying live music

They have a huge food and drink menu, with daily specials. My favorite dish was the salbutes, a homemade fried corn tortilla with assorted toppings. The crazy coconut (coconut water and coconut rum) was a refreshing drink, and the margaritas were also great.

Above Grounds Coffee House

Best for: Coffee, snacks, fresh juices

I need coffee, even on vacation, and Above Grounds Coffee House did the trick. The name is accurate because it is located in a treehouse, which matches the small beach village vibes in Placencia.

They serve espresso drinks, tea, specialty drinks, and fresh-pressed juices. They also offer baked goods. We tried a Honduran donut and some yummy carrot bread.

De’tach Food

Best for: Seafood, beachfront dining

De’tach Food was the only other restaurant that we ate at that was right on the beach, giving us a little relief from the humidity. The food is great! I got a huge lobster tail here for a very good price. We also tried the deep-fried shrimp, shrimp stir fry, and shrimp fried rice (on multiple visits). Dinner comes with a side of coconut rice or mashed potatoes (coconut rice is the way to go), watermelon, and a side salad.

The breakfast burrito and the stuffed fry jack made a yummy breakfast as well. Everything was great. However, we did hear that they were closing the week after we left (late August) for the off-season.

Rumfish y Vino

Best for: Wine, international food

Rumfish y Vino serves small plates and a selection of “classic comfort foods with a Belizean twist,” according to their website. I was excited to try Rumfish y Vino, and though it was very good, I enjoyed some of these other restaurants in Placencia more. It was upscale and expensive in comparison, which I think is just not what I was looking for on this trip. They have an extensive wine list as well as a full bar, however, which definitely makes it worth giving it a try!

I tried the shrimp linguine, and Luke got creole-style snapper. We also tried the lobster ceviche, which was huge.

Wendy’s Creole Food

Best for: Freshly prepared seafood

Wendy’s Creole Restaurant and Bar was another one of our favorite restaurants in Placencia, Belize! We ordered shakes with dinner, to mix it up, and they were good. For dinner, I ordered the special, which was Caribbean Jerk Shrimp (super good). Luke got more snapper, which was good. Both came with coconut rice.

Everything is made fresh, so the food may take some time to prepare.

Brewed Awakenings

Best for: Seaweed shakes and smoothies

At Brewed Awakenings, you can order coffee, smoothies, or seaweed shakes! It is not quite as cute as Above Grounds (no treehouse). Brewed Awakenings has a large variety of choices, including espresso drinks, coffee alternatives, superfood smoothie bowls, and more!

We tried the seaweed shakes. They were delicious and didn’t taste like seaweed at all.

The Shak Beach Cafe

Best for: Beachfront dining, fry jack

The Shak is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner with an even larger selection of shakes (with and without seaweed) near the pier. They do not accept cards for orders under $50.

We both got Huevos Rancheros for breakfast the first time, which I recommend! The last day we came back and ordered some fry jacks with jam to go. They were truly so good. I still think about this freshly fried bread, fluffy on the inside and crispy on the outside.

Reflections on Food in Belize

The food in Placencia is simple. Everything we ate seemed to be something grown or made there. Things in the grocery store declare, “Made in Belize.” Locals sold fruits and vegetables on the street. Restaurants serve mainly seafood, and almost every alcoholic drink contains Belizean coconut rum. Coming from a place where I never feel like I know where my food comes from or what is in it, this was so refreshing!
